Nori's Bridge Burning

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Nori's Bridge Burning
In this week's Hot Corner [The Daily Yomiuri], Jim Allen gives his view of the recent feud between Norihiro Nakamura and the Orix Buffaloes. The first half of the article vilifies Nori's antics, not only with the recent contract negotiations, but pulls his bewilderingly short time as a New York Met out of the closet along with Nori's uninspiring time with the Dodgers.

But Allen-san doesn't stop there. He comments that Orix has realized that they can't force a player to play with them back in 2004 when Hisashi Iwakuma refused to play with the merged Orix, so they're taking the high ground and granting Nakamura his release. Still, Orix doesn't come out looking at all rosy in the Hot Corner this week.

Jim then concludes:
Even the Yomiuri Giants have shown no interest. That's a team that recently traded two prospects to Orix for a player with even less value than Nakamura--outfielder Yoshitomo Tani.

This should be the clearest indicator that Nakamura has burned one bridge too many.
Not even do the Giants escape Jim's wrath this week. (Could he be building a reputation for not pulling the party line within the Yomiuri Group?)

I heard a rumor that Nakamura may be looking to go to South Korea. He would make the maximum of $300,000 U.S. a season which is definitely less than what he would make in Japan. However, it seems no team in Japan is even offering him anything.

Nakamura should go to Korea, make some cash and hang up his cleats after that. Those big years in Osaka when teamed up with Tuffy Rhodes to smack the cover off the ball are long gone.

Nikkan Sports has also said that Nakamura plans to only play in Japan, which would eliminate the KBO and CPBL. Whether, Nakamura is willing to make a move to either Korea or Taiwan is unlikely in my opinion. Nakamura will probably wait for an offer or retire if he doesn't receive an offer from an NPB team.

It's a shame. When Nori and Tuffy were together with the Buffs, he used to be one of my favorite players. What he did with the Mets was definitely a mystery, and now he's just gotten worse. He should look at someone like Frank Thomas. The former MVP swallowed his pride and took a tiny contract with the A's. Look where he is now after deciding to take so "little" money and try to prove himself again. Nori apparently is afraid to do that because everyone knows he will never regain his form.

Hey, K-1 wants Nori [Nikkan Sports - in Japanese]! But he says thanks but no thanks.

Is there any chance that he could try ball in the USA again, or is there just no interest?

I really don't think that's a option, as Nakamura prefers to stay in Japan. There's no interest that I know of, and Nakamura didn't do so well with the Dodgers which would probably be the cause of so little interest.

What is K-1? I looked at the article that Animaru Resulie referred to but, ...?

Initial interest was apparently shown by Yakult and Nippon Ham. However, Nippon Ham have indicated that they will not be pursuing this further. I haven't heard whether Yakult are still interested - I can't see how it would benefit them though.

Yes, both Furuta-kantoku and Hillman-kantoku have stated that they're interested in Nakamura. However, Yakult's front office told Furuta that they're only interested in developing young talent, not in signing Nori. I believe that Hillman-kantoku got a similarly vague statement of non-interest in the former Buffalo.

It looks to me like the owners have all decided to blackball Nakamura. But they're being very careful not to directly say any such thing; instead sticking to vague excuses for not signing him, despite interest by some in various organizations.
