Hiroshima Carp Baseball Academy?

Discussion in the Ask the Commish forum
Hiroshima Carp Baseball Academy?
I've always heard that at one point the Hiroshima Carp had a baseball academy in the Dominican Republic. However, the only player I ever hear of that came out of the academy to play in either the NPB or the MLB is Alfonso Soriano. Is the Academy still active and are there products other than Soriano playing pro baseball?

Timo Perez and Robinson Checo also came out of the Carp Academy.

I had no idea Timo came from the Academy. Does anyone know if it's still operational, and if so, where in the Dominican it is?

To my best knowledge, the Hiroshima Carp Academy there is still operational.

Juan Feliciano went through the Red Sox Academy, then the Carp Academy before joining Hiroshima in 2004. He is still with the Carp in 2006.

There's a little more about Soriano here.

Cody Monk, who started that thread, wrote a biography about Soriano and visited the Carp Academy as well as part of his research. There was something here about it, complete with photos he took, but I can't find it now.

Other graduates who played in Japan include:

Angel Bautista, Esterlin Franco (2005), Antonio Guzman, Jose Martinez, Reynoso Pascual, Felix Perdomo, Luis Perez, Alejandro Quezada, Carlos Rivera, Felix Rodriguez, and Mario Sangilbert.

The academy is located in San Pedro de Macoris (from this page in Japanese).

I recall reading that the Carp fielded a team in the DSL in the 1990s; does anyone know if this is correct?

The Carp did field a DSL team from 1993-1995. They went 52-18 in '93 (2nd behind the Blue Jays East) and had league MVP Charlie Pena. In '94, they went 43-26 (5th overall of 21 teams, but best in the San Pedro de Macoris division); Timo Perez was the offensive leader. In 1995, they had the best record (58-13) and won the playoffs.
